Stone Sculpture

Half day workshops at The Sculpture Hut near Portland Bill on the Isle of Portland, Dorset. Choose a chunk of Portland Stone, and create your own sculpture to take home.

First time with a mallet and chisel?  There’s nothing like it – dollops of encouragement and guidance provided with the essential tea/coffee and biscuits.  Bring your friend, your mother, your partner, your child….

Already creative?  Sometimes it is hard to work alone: working with others can be a way to find motivation and inspiration; to share ideas and explore methods and materials….

  1. Sarah, for your help, inspiration and encouragement in my being able to produce a stone carving that I am very proud of, I thank you.
Your fine set of tools, lovely coffee and scintillating conversation made it a very special and enjoyable day in surroundings that can only be described as heavenly.
    God bless you.

  2. Hi Sarah, thank you for a great day on Saturday. Belinda and I had a thoroughly enjoyable time and were very pleased with our results with you.Thank you for the encouragement and the two sculpture look great in the garden.

  3. Hi Sarah, can believe time has flow by since I was there in April – but just wanted to say Hi and thanks again for a great day. My sculpture made it home to Sydney (AUS) and I doing some research to update my chisels for some more sandstone carving and looking for a base for the Portland Stone 🙂
Have fun carving and creating !

    • Great to hear from you Chris, and wonderful to know Portland stone from The Sculpture Hut has made it to the other side of the world! Look forward to seeing your next stone creations…

  4. Thank you Sarah for a fabulous time in such a special part of the world. Am purchasing my own tools to be able to carry on with the stone. Your generosity in sharing your skills and insights has been inspirational. I feel very fortunate to have had the time to really consider my actions with the stone. It is also this consideration in a broader sense that I take away. Hope to be able to return again.

  5. Thanks Caroline – I had a lot of fun too – its always inspirational to see what people get up to: my abiding image of the morning is of you and Lara working in tandem and the possibilities of performance art!

  6. Thanks to Sarah, my family and I had a wonderful creative morning at the Stone Hut in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We were all delighted to come away with three sculptures and if you have never had a go at Stone carving I would highly recommend it. We had a lot of fun!
